Green Thumb
This list includes some of my favorite local and internet resources
for plants, seeds, and gardening supplies, to help novice and experienced
gardeners find information and inspiration.
Sunnycrest Greenhouses
19725 Governors Hwy
Flossmoor, IL 60422
708-799-9200
Sunnycrest is my favorite local garden center for everything from flowering
shrubs, beautiful, large, healthy shade- and sun-loving perennial plants,
(including a nice selection of native plants,) and annuals for containers
and the garden. Sunnycrest carries a large selection of vegetables and
herbs, and has a fantastic array of tomato varieties, including heirlooms.
They sell soil amendments, professional-grade potting
soil, garden tools, beautiful pottery, and more, including pumpkins, gourds
and decorative cornstalks for fall, Christmas trees, wreaths, and beautiful
winter greens for container decorating after Thanksgiving. In business
over 20 years, this local, independently-owned nursery grows most of
the plants they sell.
Their quality, experience, knowledge,
and friendly, helpful staff are second to none in the area. Don't let
the small parking lot and frontage fool you - Sunnycrest is home to five
greenhouses and a much larger, more extensive facility than meets the
eye from the street.
- Possibility
Place in Monee is a local
wholesale grower of native plants and shrubs using environmentally-friendly
growing methods. More homeowners and gardeners than ever are appreciating
the value of adding native plants to their landscapes for their beauty,
durability, and ease of care. Natives are naturally adapted to
our Midwest climate and soil conditions, and provide food for birds,
and butterflies and other pollinators.
More homeowners every day are turning
their attention to sustainable, environmentally-friendly practices in
their indoor and outdoor spaces. Adding native plants
to the home landscape is an excellent way to go green.
- White Flower
Farm is a mail order and
internet supplier of perennials, shrubs, and gardening supplies and
gifts. A long-time favorite of mine, they have many old favorites,
along with a nice selection of new introductions each season.
- Heronswood
Nursery is another great
internet resource for the garden. Find the rare, the unusual,
and beautiful new twists on old favorites at Heronswood.
- Renee’s
Garden is an internet supplier
of heirloom vegetable and flower seeds. Varieties are selected
by Renee herself, as she travels the world to bring a wonderful selection
of edible and ornamental plant seeds to her loyal customers.
- Gardens
Alive sells a great selection
of organically-produced vegetable seeds, and my favorite natural fertilizers
– the Alive series, as in Flowers Alive, Tomatoes Alive, and a variety
of plant-specific fertilizers I love and have used for years.
If you use Tomatoes Alive on your tomato plants, tell your neighbors
and co-workers, or even your local food pantry to get ready, because
you’ll have more tomatoes than you know what to do with.
- Burpee is my go-to seed supplier for
some of my tried-and-true old favorite heirloom and hybrid varieties
of vegetables.
